Phuntsho Dorji

Professional biography

Phuntsho Dorji  is a teacher educator. He started his teaching journey in 1989. Since then he has taught in  the schools as well as in a training institute. He taught Economics and English in schools before he was transferred to Paro College of Education (the then Teacher Training College).

At the college, he taught several professional courses for students who enrolled in both Primary Teacher’s Certificate (PTC)  and Zhungkha Teacher’s Certificate (ZTC) programs until 2003. He also served as a PTC Course Leader from 2001 to 2002.

He has been teaching several professional modules in both B. Ed Primary and B. Ed Secondary programs since 2004. Starting 2004 he also served as a Head of Department (Professional Studies) for over six years.

 

Starting 2004 he has also been teaching a professional module (Curriculum Theory) in the Master of Education in Leadership and Management program. The following are the modules he has been teaching so far in different programs and different levels:

Pema Yangzom

Professional biography

 

Pema Yangzom is working as Assistant Lecturer, she has started working in Paro college of Education since August, 2017. She has completed her Bachelors Degree in Education (Hons) with Special Education Needs as major and Guidance and Counselling as Minor elective from SEGi University in Malaysia, May 2017. she is also a Dual award certificate recipient in the same discipline from Marjon University in the United Kingdom. Since she started her career, she has been an active member of M.Ed Inclusive Education program committee. She assisted the team in reviewing and developing new modules for the program. She has participated in few research led by the senior faculty members and assisted in data collection, analysis and literature review. She has Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (2019) and Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (2020) from Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. Aside from her teaching commitments, she has served as residential coordinator for ladies from August, 2017 to July 2019. She has participated in several stakeholder’s workshops and meetings hosted by Royal Education Council, Ministry of Education, UNICEF, Bhutan Foundation and Samtse College of Education especially in area of Inclusive Education and integration of Inclusive principles in Curriculums and other programs since 2017.

Lungten Wangdi

Professional biography

Lungten Wangdi , PhD is a Lecturer, known for rural, nativeness and indigenous behavior, funny and dependable. He is reliable, hard-working, conscientious, honest and courteous. He is well-known for his compassionately countryside attitude, especially his genuine support and help the community of learners.

Khandu Dorji

Professional biography

An experienced teacher and education leader, Ms. Khandu Dorji has around 20 years of experience in direct hands-on teaching, development of curriculum, leadership of in-service professional development programs for teachers and direct teaching of future education leaders. Ms. Khandu possesses extensive knowledge in education and pedagogy, technical skills in teaching improvement, professional development and research.  Ms. Khandu worked as Research Officer with the Royal Council of Education, has developed in service professional development programs, written policy and procedures for the functioning of the centenary teacher institute, facilitated in-service professional development programs for the teachers and contributed in hosting conferences and research projects.  As a Teacher and later Vice Principal of Jigme Namgyal Lower Secondary School, Thimphu, she led and managed the overall school academic and co-curricular activities, curriculum implementation, monitoring and evaluation and established necessary support services for teachers at the school and district levels. She has also trained and facilitated numerous scouting training and leadership programs. As school counsellor she initiated programs and conducted youth leadership training, peer counsellors training and other life skills programs.  Ms. Khandu is currently a Lecturer with the College of Education, Paro, Royal University of Bhutan. She holds a Master of Education from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada and a Bachelor of Education from Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. She also holds a Diploma in Counselling from the National council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi. She is also a certified counsellor by the National Board of Counselling Certificate, USA (NBCC ) and Bhutan Board of Counsellor BBCC.

Karma Galey

Professional biography

Karma Galey is an Assistant Professor at Paro College of Education under Royal University of Bhutan. He began his teaching career in July 1996 serving in a remote school under Lhuntse Dzongkhag. He was transferred to Samtse College of Education, then National Institute of Education in July 1998 as a lecturer in primary mathematics and mathematics education for B.Ed primary and B.Ed secondary mathematics teachers respectively. After completing his Master in Education in mathematics education from University of New England, Australia in 1999, took various responsibilities at Samtse College of Education viz: coordinated Distance Education program from 2001 to 2005; coordinated Certificate in Teaching Primary Mathematics for school teachers from 2005 to 2009; headed Department Mathematics from 2007 to 2009 and took the role of Program Leader of B.Ed primary from 2009 – 2010. He also undertook various activities both at national and international level to enhance system of education of the country.

Karma Galey left Samtse College of Education after serving more than two decades to Paro College of Education at the end of 2010. He taught primary mathematics, FIT and ICT modules to B.Ed students at Paro College of Education and currently undergoing his PhD studies at University of New England, Australia.

Jambay Lhamo

Professional biography

Jambay Lhamo is a lecturer in the Paro College of Education. She holds a PhD in Education from the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia, and a Master of Education from Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. Additionally, she has an MA in Contemplative Education from Naropa University, Colorado, USA. She began her teaching career in 1998 after completing a Bachelor of Education from Samtse College of Education.

For eight years, she served as a science teacher in schools before joining Paro College of Education in 2008 as a teacher educator. Since then, she has taught diploma, bachelors, and masters programs to both pre-service and in-service students. She played an active role in writing and developing the National Science Curriculum and science textbooks, currently used in Bhutanese schools, for classes four, five, and six. She also developed two modules for the diploma program in Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) at Paro College: Supporting Young Children’s Scientific Thinking and Guiding Responsive and Reciprocal Relationships.

Jambay Lhamo was a member of the Science Committee for the Royal Education Council, Ministry of Education from 2013 to March 2019, contributing passionately to the review, innovation, and development of curriculum and teaching materials to enhance education in Bhutan. Currently, she serves on the MEd in Primary Science Programme Committee and is a member of the Programme Board of Examiners for the MEd in Primary Science and the MEd in Educational Leadership and Management.

Dorji Wangchuk

Professional biography

Dorji Wangchuk, PhD is currently the Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages (DRIL). He was appointed as a teacher trainer in the then Teacher Training Centre, Paro (currently Paro College of Education) by the Royal Civil Service Commission in January 1999. Prior to becoming a teacher trainer, he worked as a teacher in Drametse Junior High School, Mongar, Bhutan for two and half years. Ever since he joined the teacher training college, he taught in-service as well as pre-service candidates both at the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has supervised scores of M. Ed students. He has resources numerous in-service programmes in various departments like Non-Formal Education (NFE), Department of Curriculum and Research Development (DCRD), Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), and in other sister colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan viz. Sherubtse College, Samtse College of Education and College of Language and Cultural Studies.

He worked as the Programme Leader for the B. Ed Primary Programme (2010 – 2012) and then as the Dean of Academic Affairs (July 2015 – August 2018) in Paro College of Education. Dr. Wangchuk has authored educational research papers, newspaper articles, three books (Dance in the Clouds; Off Home Shore and English through Folktales of Bhutan) and several short stories, of which The Blind Teacher was studied as a text in class VI English literature for over a decade. Currently, he is the Editor In-Chief of RABSEL (College’s biannual journal) and Journal of Educational Action Research (JEAR) and is heading the research and industrial linkages in PCE. He is also the foreign External Examiner for the PhD candidates perusing English Language Education at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), India.

Sangay Biddha

Professional biography

Sangay Biddha was a primary school teacher before she joined Paro College of Education. From 1987 to 2008, she taught general subjects to lower primary students and English to upper primary and secondary students. After completing her Master Degree from University of New Brunswick in 2006, she facilitated the National English Lead Teacher’s programme (2006-2012). She joined Paro College of Education in 2009 and since then she has taught pre-service and in-service students, facilitated professional development workshops for local and national level, written modules for primary, secondary and Master programmes. Her central expertise lies in primary education, therefore, she teaches, advocates and demonstrates her expertise in pedagogies for young children, language and literacy skills and effective teaching skills. She was involved in developing courses and training facilitators for Early Childhood Education and Non-formal Education (2011-2015). She was Programme Leader for B. Ed primary, B. Ed Secondary and B. Ed in-service programmes from 2015 to 2019. During her tenure, she ensured academic quality, systematic service and well-being of students and faculty by constantly vetting out issues related to teaching learning, communicating with stakeholders and creating a conducive learning atmosphere. She also led the College Literary Committee for five and half years (2010-1015).

 

As a focal person for Media Literacy Education (Led by Ministry of Information and Communication) from 2010 to 2015, she was involved in developing the Framework of Media Literacy Education and facilitating training workshops for pilot schools. She has also represented the college as Commissioner in National Commission for Women and Children (2009-2014). Her research interests include teaching learning in primary education, early childhood, gender, inclusivity, language and literacy skills.                                          

Tsering Yangzom Nidup

Professional biography

Tsering Yangzome Nidup is a senior English lecturer, currently working at the Paro College of Education. Besides being a keen teacher educator for 22 years she has also shouldered the responsibilities of an Editor (2014-2017) at the Centre for Educational Research and Development (CERD) for the RABSEL and JEAR journals and PCEyes newsletter published by the Centre. She has assumed various roles at the College in her capacity as the Programme Leader (Diploma in Leadership and Management, 2006-2010) and Course Leader for the Bachelors of Education (Secondary, 2005-2007).

 

She has a Master’s degree in English from the Bond University, Queensland in Australia. She is also the recipient of both the Vice Chancellor’s Award and the Dean’s award for three consecutive semesters while at the University.  She teaches subjects related to the English Language and Literature and methodology related courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

She has resourced workshops on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) both at the tertiary and school levels and ELT workshops for English teachers in Bhutan. Her areas of expertise are in the areas of English Language/ Literature, Multigrade teaching, Media and Information Literacy and Critical Literacy. She was also the Convener for the International Seminar on Sexuality Education hosted at the Paro College in December, 2015.

Tshering Wangmo

Professional biography

 

Tshering Wangmo, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. She began her carrier as a teacher educator in February, 1983 at the Pre-Primary Teacher Training Centre in Paro under the Ministry of Education. Since then she has been working in the same organization as it evolved from a Teacher Training College and Demonstration School (TTC & DS) to TTC and to National Institute of Education (NIE) and now to Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan.

 

During her whole tenure as a teacher educator, she has written and vetted courses, taught undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervised Masters theses, trained school and university teachers and talked to many parents. She has facilitated several workshops and trainings for teachers in early year education specially in the areas of teaching skills, early childhood education, research and contemporary theories and practices. She headed the Department of English in the college and also lead and revamped programmes and modules in programmes such as the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Diploma in Early Child Care and Development.

 

She is currently the Director of Rinpung ECCD Centre. She is very passionate in the education of young children and has spent 13 years of her life studying in this area. She is a part of the leading team for ECCD in the Paro College of Education. Her teachings emphasize rigor, relevance, recency, and real-world competencies, and the pertinence of Bhutanese home funds of knowledge through teacher education. She was a part of the committee who set up the first draft ECCD policy for Bhutan in 2008 and continues to be an active participant in any programmes concerning early year education. She is a member of the Higher Degree Research Committee of the RUB.
