Karma Jigyel

Professional biography

Karma Jigyel PhD, is a Lecturer and a Programme Leader for Master of Education in Inclusive Education. Under his leadership Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) introduced the first ever fulltime postgraduate course of Master of Education in Inclusive Education in 2020. He joined the teaching profession in 2001 and taught mathematics and physics in a middle school.

In 2006 he was transferred to a teacher’s college, Samtse College of Education, RUB as a lecturer. He offered courses such as educational assessment, mathematics and professional courses both to undergraduate and postgraduate students. In January 2008 he moved to Paro College of Education and took roles of Department Head, academic and research committee member and club coordinator.  He offered courses such as educational assessment, mathematics, research and leadership courses to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, in-service teachers and principals. Further, in his teaching and leadership roles he has written courses on inclusive and special education, classroom assessment, research methods and projects, mathematics education, offered consultancy services, and fostered national and international networks with stakeholders. He has also supervised Masters theses and reviewed journal manuscripts for international universities.

Tenzin Choden

Professional biography

 

Tenzin Choden Lekphell, is an Assistant Lecturer at the Paro College of Education. She joined the college in August, 2018 after completing her undergraduate studies (honours) at Segi University, Malaysia, as a scholarship recipient of the Royal University of Bhutan. She has majored in Special Education and minored in Guidance and Counselling at Segi University and is currently working under the Inclusive Education Department of Paro College of Education. Hence she currently teaches modules such as Teaching Children with Special Needs, Enhancing Child Development and Effective Teaching Skills to the undergraduates in the degree as well as diploma program.

Thinley Dorji

Professional biography

Thinley Dorji (lecturer) is a teacher educator. He has a Master’s degree from the University of Newcastle, Australia (2008). He joined his teaching profession in July 2001 after completing his bachelor’s degree (primary) from the National Institute of Education, Samtse. Since then he was working as a teacher in one of the middle secondary schools in Mongar (Eastern Bhutan). He served as a school teacher for seven years (July 2001-July 2008) in the Ministry of Education (MoE). He has experience in teaching students both in primary and high school. He taught different subjects in the lower classes and geography and history in the higher classes. In August 2008, he was transferred to Paro College of Education, the Royal University of Bhutan as a lecturer. Since then he has been teaching pre-service undergraduate and postgraduate students, and also in-service school teachers in bachelor’s program (B.Ed. pry) and in Master’s (M.Ed.) program. Ever since he joined the college he took up the task of teaching different modules such as Curriculum Theory/Studies, Teaching Methods in the Upper Primary, Teaching Methods in Lower Primary, Teaching Strategy, Teaching Skills, Bhutanese Education System, and Education for Development. He trained and supervised student teachers in the teaching practice (field teaching) for many groups of students.  In the teaching arena, he was involved in updating and reviewing different modules in the bachelor’s program initiated by the college. Besides teaching task, he was also involved in other responsibilities such as committee member for different programs, club coordinator, class advisor, member sectary, etc. Currently, he is offering Curriculum Theory and Teaching Methods in the Upper Primary in the undergraduate and postgraduate students (both pre-service and in-service students).

Rinchen Tshewang

Professional biography

 

Rinchen Tshewang, PhD  is an Assistant Professor. He has PhD from Queensland University of Technology and M.Sc (Maths Education) from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. He received his PGCE in Economics & Mathematics from NIE, Samtse and B.A.(Hons) in Economics from Sherubtse College. He has been a teacher and teacher educator for the last 25 years. He started his teaching career in 1st November, 1995. Since then he has taught secondary school students, undergraduate and postgraduate students, trained school teachers and principals. He worked as a teacher at Sarpang Junior High School from November 1995 to July 1996, and at Tangmachhu High School from July 1997 to February 1999. He was transferred to Paro College of Education, the then Teacher Training College in March, 1999. Besides, teaching and among many other job responsibilities, he had coordinated the Examination Unit for almost a decade (from July 2004 to April 2013) at the college.

 

In addition, he has facilitated various in-country consultancy and professional development workshops/trainings to different clients for government as well many as private institutions. Dr. Rinchen currently looks after the Teaching Practice Unit of the college, and supervises both M.Ed (Educational Leadership and Management) and M.Ed (Dzongkha) research projects.

Ugyen Tshomo

Professional biography

Ugyen Tshomo Assistant Professor, currently working at Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. She is Project Manager of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education a project funded by UNFPA, Bhutan. Her research background ranges from classroom teaching learning practices to knowledge Attitude and Practices on Sexuality. She authored a book– Life’s Tapestry ( 2010).Ugyen has completed her master degree from University of Newcastle, Australia (2007). She graduated with English Honors degree from Sherubtse, Kanglung and thereafter pursued her PGDE from Samtse College of Education.She has rich background on teaching primary children and curriculum, middle and high school in Bhutan experiences teaching school children from Western part of Bhutan to Central part of Bhutan.

She was part of English working committee when High school English curriculum was revamped by Ministry of Education. She is a member of English Committee at Royal Education Council. She worked as Head of the Department English at Paro College of Education (  2007- 2010 ) and aligned the whole secondary English curriculum at the college. With her management the department developed ten new modules which are at present used by Samtse College of Education. She also served as Staff Secretary and drafted Staff Welfare Book (2007-2010).

She attended many international seminars and presented papers. She also served as focal person for Environmental Education at the college and worked closely with RSPN and developed Environmental Education Module ( which is at present used by Samtse College of Education). She worked as core member with Department of Curriculum Research and Development in developing Class XI and XII Introduction to Media Studies, a text book. Currently she is Project Manager of Comprehensive Sexuality Education for UNFPA, RUB.

Ugyen Namdel

Professional biography

 

Ugyen Namdel is Associate Lecturer in Paro College of Education. He is currently the Programme leader of B.Ed Primary programme and faculty for Health and Physical Education and Creative Arts. He has been teaching in the schools for eight years before joining the college. He holds Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Health and Physical Education from Samtse College of Education.

His working experiences includes developing a module for Bhutanese Traditional Music that will be offered to the new Bachelors programs; as an illustrator in developing RNDA manual with MoE/UNICEF; as an illustrator for developing teachers manual and text books for Value Education, HPE and EVS subjects; as a writer for developing HPE Text book; as an illustrator for developing MCH Handbook for MoH. He is also the club adviser for the college ‘Performing Arts’ club.

Ugyen Choden

Professional biography

 

Ugyen Choden is a Senior Lecturer at Paro College of Education. She started teaching in schools since 2007 as a language and Health and Physical Education teacher. She started her career as a lecturer from 2015 with a master’s degree in Physical Education from Lovely Professional University in Punjab, India. She teaches Health and Physical Education for both Diploma and B. Ed programmes. She is currently the Programme Leader for Diploma in Sports Coaching and Physical Education programme. In her teaching role she has been an active facilitator in training the national teacher to teach HPE across the country along with her active role as a curriculum developer.

 

Her research interests are in youth fitness, student attitude towards HPE, self-efficacy beliefs of HPE teachers and blended learning. She was involved in an International project on Blended Learning and plays active role in promoting blended learning in the Bhutanese schools.

Thinley Wangchuk

Professional biography

 

Thinley Wangchuk is a teacher educator. He started his career as a teacher in July 1995. Prior to joining the college, he served in Ugyen Dorji Higher Secondary School (1995 – 1997) and Gyelpozhing Higher Secondary School (1998 till February 1999) teaching Chemistry and Physics to the students. He joined Paro College of Education as a teacher educator in March 1999 and since then he has taught Science Education, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Education and professional modules namely Skills for Effective Teaching, Assessment and evaluation, and Teaching skills to the students. In addition to his teaching responsibilities in the college, he has worked as the Head of Department for ICT (2008 – 2011) during which he led his teacher educator colleagues in streamlining the ICT modules and professional development in the ICT department in collaboration with the professors from NIE, Singapore (2008-2011).  From 2012 to 2015, he served the college as the Head of the School (HoS) for Bachelor Studies for a period of three and half years during which he managed the B.Ed programme as desired. Currently, he works as the Programme Leader for B.Ed Primary Programme.

Thinley Phuntsho

Professional biography

 

Thinley Phuntsho, (Master in Computer Science) is a teacher educator. He started to teach in February 2009. And he is currently an ICT faculty of Paro College of Education under the Royal University of Bhutan. He has taught ICT electives module (ICT202, ICT203, ICT204, ICT408, ICT 410), ICT literacy, ICT in education, functional information technology, educational assessment and evaluation, skills for effective teaching and teaching strategy courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has 11 years of experience in the teaching profession in tertiary education. He has participated as co-researchers in the research team in the college. Recently, he is engaged in developing the ICT modules for the new primary curriculum in the college. He has also written information technology literacy and ICT modules for the new Dzongkha primary program. As of now, he is a B.Ed. programme committee member in the program broad of examiners, PBE (2019). In his capacity, he has contributed to the development of the PgDE modules translation for the teaching skills. (2019).He has started the culture of the academic literary activities in the college for the professional growth of student’s learning. (2010-2017). He has also been worked as team member for Library Renewal Partnership(LRP) which is collaborated with Phoenix International Baccalaureate in Philippines and with RUB. Currently, he is also working as a core team member for Bhutan Professional Standard Teacher, BPST ICT-CST competency standards. (2019). He believes that the act of teaching requires passionate, fascinate and commitment towards learning new innovative ideas and skills which are required in the 21st century. As a teacher educator, his conviction in education, “every child realizes the currency, recency, relevancy, need of ICT integration in learning and teaching in the 21st Century”. Thus, he carries broadly interested in doing research in educational technologies, digital technologies, and assistive technologies.

Sonam Dorji W

Professional biography

Sonam Dorji W. is a teacher educator. He joined the teaching profession in 2001. After pursuing Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), he taught English and History at Damphu Higher Secondary School for two years (2002-2003). In the early 2004 he was appointed as a lecturer by the Ministry of Education. Since then he taught undergraduate and post graduate students, supervised undergraduate Action Research and Masters Dissertations. He was a Distance Education Programme (DEP) Coordinator and acting Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages at Samtse College of Education (2008-2012). As a DEP coordinator, he led and nurtured the B.Ed. Secondary and Primary programmes that emphasized on the professional development needs for the in-service teachers.  He secured grants/funds to support Distance Education learners through ICT support system. He initiated localization of Moodle in Dzongkha Language and strengthened the use of Moodle across all the modules. He is the member of Paro Town Committee member for Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy. He is also the core team member of the Global Citizenship Education (GCED).
