STEM Education Centre, PCE

 

Spurred by the transformational education reform taking place in the country today, Paro College ol Education is positioning itself strategically to play a lead role in this process of re-purposing the education system. The focused and comprehensive reform process states in unequivocal terms the urgency and centrality of STEM education.  PCE aspires to the full development of STEM  education, research and training in the Rinpung Choeling Campus blessed by the magnificent Rinpung Dzong. The plan is foster creativity, divergent thinking, deep knowledge and understanding of the fundamental disciplines, use of technology, innovation, practical application of knowledge, and problem solving in the context of realworld challenges. It is expected that with deep knowledge, understanding practical application and values of STEM, teacher education graduates will be well qualified and competent to foster an active culture of STEM learning and teaching in Bhutanese schools.

STEM Education Centre will

 

  1. Work closely with the College management and key stakeholders within the university and beyond to set up a clear vision, action plan and other initiatives for the development and propagation of STEM
  2. Foster an active and ever-evolving culture of knowledge and application related to STEM education and research in light of the Royal vision for education, local and global perspectives and developments in STEM education, national STEM education policies and emerging discourses, and STEM education courses and current developments in the field in reputed teacher education institutions in the
  3. Develop a clear roadmap for STEM education and research development for PCE and ensure the full achievement of the goals set for the College.
  4. Play a lead role in setting up a STEM Education Centre in the College’s Rinpung Choeling campus.
  5. Organize STEM education and research events and other forums for students and STEM education professionals in the country.
  6. Based on international and local bestpractices, critically review all STEM related modules in PCE’s Masters and Undergraduate programmes.
  7. Set up plans and strategies for STEM innovation projects forthe College and the wider STEM education community.
  8. Work with key stakeholders within the Ministry of Education, the Druk Cyalpo’s lnstitute, schools, industry, and relevant local and international partners to promote STEM education and research in the country.
  9. Mobilize resources for the development of STEM teaching, research and professional
  10. Ensure the full integration of STEM into all relevant programmes taught in the College, quality delivery of the modules, and development of graduate competencies relevant to STEM learning in Bhutanese.

Position Title                            : Assistant Project Officer

Position Level                         : PL 08

Type of Appointment              : Contract (Initial Contract for 1 Year, renewable up-to 3 Years)

Minimum qualification          : Bachelor’s Degree

Eligibility criteria             : Minimum aggregate of 60% each in class X (English + best 4 subjects) and class XII (English + best 3 subjects), and 55% in Bachelor Degree (Honors) or 60% in Bachelor (General). However, the benchmark criteria will not apply to those with minimum of five years of relevant work experience.

 

 

A candidate must: 

  1. Be a Bhutanese citizen
  2. Have attained at least 18 years of age but not more than 45 years.
  3. Meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Disability Equality Training (DET) and Self-Advocacy Workshop – IDRC

Disability Equality Training (DET) and Self-Advocacy Workshop 

 

Paro College of Education (PCE) with financial support from Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) and International Development Research Center (IDRC) conducted a two-day training workshop event on DET and self-advocacy on September 18 and 19, 2023. This event is a part of a joint project titled A Multi-Country Study on Educational Innovations for Out of School Children (OOSC) and Children at Risk of Dropping Out (covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal). The event was conducted jointly with experts from Disabled People’s Organization of Bhutan (DPOB) and PCE at Tushita Eco-Lodge in Paro. About 35 participants attended the event. The participants included SEN teachers, parents, children with disability from the four implementing partners of the project namely, Changangkha Middle School, Yangchen Gatshel High School, Ability Bhutan Society and VTOB Foundation. Similarly, the tutors and PCE postgraduate students of MEd in Inclusive Education attended the training workshop event.

 

 

The objectives for conducting this training event are as follows:

 

  • Promote awareness and understanding of disability rights, challenges, and the significance of inclusion;
  • Increase awareness of comprehensive sexuality education for children and youth with disabilities;
  • Empower participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively support individuals with disabilities in various social and educational settings;
  • Emphasize the importance of self-advocacy for individual rights, self-care, seeking support, and learning from others, especially for individuals with disabilities;
  • Facilitate a collaborative approach among parents, educators, and community members to advance disability equality;
  • Educate children, youth with disabilities, and their parents about job opportunities and workplace conduct; and
  • Reduce stigma and dispel misconceptions related to disabilities to foster a more inclusive and accepting society.

Bijoy Kumar Rai

Professional biography

Bijoy Kumar Rai, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Primary Education. He has PhD in Education from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and M Ed in Primary Science from the Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia. He started his teaching career in July 1994 as a high school physics and math teacher. Gathering school experience for over 13 years and completing M Ed in Primary Science, he joined Paro College of Education in 2008. Besides, the professional modules, he specializes in pedagogical practices, teaching of primary science and research modules. He has supervised research projects in both undergraduate and master level. He is interested in pedagogies that interest and engages school students in science lessons, and in STEM education.

He served as the Head of Health and Physical Education Department briefly in 2010 during which the Diploma for Physical Education and Sports Coaching was initiated. He pioneered the establishment of Life Skill based Comprehensive Sexuality Education in the colleges under the Royal University of Bhutan in partnership with the UNFPA, Bhutan. Furthermore, he served as the Programme Leader for Master of Educational Leadership and Management from 2014 to 2017. Currently, he is one of the members of College Research Committee and Programme Board of Examination for M Ed in Primary Science.
