Professional biography

Dorji Thinley, PhD, is a teacher educator. He started to teach in August 1997. Since then he has written and vetted courses, taught undergraduate and postgraduate students, trained school and university teachers, and supervised Masters and doctoral theses. He was President of Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), from August 2015 to July 2018. In August 2018 he moved to Paro College of Education, RUB, as its President. In 2011 he was appointed by the Royal Civil Service Commission as the Director of Research and External Relations to lead research development in RUB and worked in the University’s central office in Thimphu till 2015. Between 2007 and 2011 he was Lecturer and Dean of Academic Affairs (appointed as DAA by the Royal Civil Service Commission in 2008) at Paro College of Education. In his teaching and leadership roles he has initiated, led and nurtured the development of several bachelors and Masters programmes that emphasize rigor, relevance, recency, and real-world competencies, and the preservation of Bhutan’s culture and heritage and sustainable development through teacher education. He has set up policies, systems and processes for positive development, proactive growth, change and innovation, and fostered domestic and international partnerships. He was a member of the International Creative University Network (2013-2015), Board Director, Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy (2013-2018), Global Representative for the International Positive Education Network (2015), Chair of the English Subject Committee, Royal Education Council/Ministry of Education (2009-2016), elected member of the Executive Board of International Society for Teacher Education (2012-2015), member of the Programme Advisory Committee, Royal Institute of Law, Bhutan (2014), and Founding Managing Editor of Bhutan Journal of Research and Development, Royal University of Bhutan (2011–2015). As the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academics, he is currently the Chair of RUB’s Programmes and Quality Committee.
