Distinguished Guest Lecture on ‘Research and Academic Writing in the Age of AI’

Paro College of Education organised the third Guest Lecture Series session, titled “Research and Academic Writing in the Age of AI”, on 16 October 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., facilitated by Dr Caroline Brassard of the National University of Singapore. Participants were mostly Master’s students, along with faculty members and other pre-service teachers. The programme provided a platform to examine the implications of artificial intelligence for education, research, and scholarly writing.
Drawing on Singapore’s experience with AI in education, the session explored how emerging technologies can support teaching, personalised learning, assessment, and educators’ professional development. The discussion highlighted the importance of combining technological innovation with teacher preparedness, institutional support, and responsible governance.
The programme also examined AI’s opportunities and challenges in Bhutan’s education system. Opportunities included supporting inclusive learning, developing teaching resources, improving research and academic writing, and strengthening administrative efficiency. These possibilities were considered alongside challenges relating to digital access, AI literacy, the reliability of generated information, cultural and linguistic relevance, data privacy, and academic integrity. Attention was given to AI rules and guidelines, including the role of a national policy framework in guiding responsible adoption. The discussions underscored the need for institutional guidelines aligned with national policy directions and grounded in educational quality, equity, and ethical responsibility. In relation to research and academic writing, the programme emphasised critical engagement with AI tools while preserving originality, accurate referencing, and researchers’ accountability for their work.
The initiative reflects the College’s commitment to cross-sharing of ideas involving stakeholders, strengthening research capacity and preparing educators to engage thoughtfully and responsibly with AI.
