About Us

Paro College of Education is one of the constituent colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan .It began as teacher  training centre for preschool care, which was formally inaugurated on 4th November 1975 with 8 female trainees and a demonstration school at the Rinpung campus.

The new Teacher training Center academic Campus at Nangkha was inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck on 18th November 1999.

Paro College of Education offers  bachelors in Education (B.Ed) in both modes (regular and distance) in English as well as in the national language, Dzongkha, nine months regular postgraduate diploma in education in Dzongkha, two years regular diploma in Sports Education and Coaching as well as master’s degree in Dzongkha, master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management for school heads and diploma in the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) as part-time programme.

The current student enrolment is 1011 full time and 473 part-time. Apart from its spacious infrastructure, the College has a number of facilities such as its growing library, computer services, student services and good games and sports facilities to provide holistic education to its student teachers.

July 1975:   Establishes as a Pre-school Care Training Centre. Training  programme  started with eight female trainees on 4 November,  1975.

June 1985: Common Primary Teacher Certificate (PTC) curriculum with then NIE Samtse. The TTC became Teacher Training Center/College.

Teachers Training Centre (Joint Primary Teacher training programme with NIE, Samtse now Samtse College of Education)

Feb. 1993: 18 Month course for Zhungkha Teacher Certificate (ZTC) launched.

March 1993:TTC phase III construction began under SDC/Helvetas    support November 18, 1999: Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk inaugurated the new academic complex at Chong Nangkar. Intake capacity increased from 220 to 445.

Aug. 1999: The first batch of B.Ed (Primary) in Dzongkha and English started.

July 2000: The TTC upgraded to the National Institute of Education following an amalgamation with CAPSD

May 2001: Centre for Educational Research and Development (CERD) launched.

Jan. 2002: Launched (jointly with St FX) 5 winters  M.Ed part time programme in Educational Leadership and Mangement , taken over by PCE in 2006 and reduced to 3 winters in 2009. In the same year  B.Ed secondary was launched.

Sept. 2003: Separated from the Ministry of Education and became a part of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) and renamed as Paro  College of Education.

Dzongkha B.Ed distance started

Dec.17, 2005: Completion of the Phase IV part I construction and foundation stone for phase IV part II construction laid.

2006: Launched the  Royal University Sports Federation of Bhutan (RUSFoB).

2007: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Dzongkha) started

Dec. 2008:  Completion of phase IV construction

2012: B.Ed Primary (distance) transferred from Samtse College of Education

2014: M.Ed (Dzongkha) started

2015: Diploma in Physical Education & Sports Coaching & ECCD started.
