PCE Bids Farewell to an Outstanding Educator
On 23rd September, 2020, the staff of Paro College of Education showed their respect and bid farewell to Assistant Professor Lopen Pema Dendup, who retired after an exemplary 40 years of teaching, research and community service in Bhutan’s higher education sector. An outstanding educator, Lopen Pema is remembered by hundreds of students in different walks of life as a most learned, disciplined, scholarly, well-meaning and kind hearted teacher who always put the interest of the learner in the forefront. Colleagues who have worked with him in the erstwhile Semtokha Rigzhung Institute and Paro College of Education know him as an educator whose teaching expertise, scholarship, professional contributions and knowledge of Bhutanese culture can be matched only by a few in modern times. Loved and remembered by students and colleagues as a person with an open mind, deep humility and unwavering personality, he was a source of hope and inspiration for his students and those working in the education sector.
PCE President, Dr Dorji Thinley, described Lopen Pema Dendup as “an educator par excellence – a poet, composer, choreographer, singer, a custodian of Bhutanese culture, history and heritage with an impeccable and inimitable knowledge and practice of these in his entire professional life … a rare teacher, an accomplished writer whose knowledge and expertise were sought after by many … a Professor indeed”. He said that an academic like Lop Pema is rare these days and that he will be missed. Reminiscing his twelve years of close association with Lopen Pema Dendup, ILCS President Lopen Lungten Gyatsho said that Lopen Pema was someone who always put the “larger interest” of the institute first and provided clarity and wisdom to those around him.
When asked by colleagues what his next priorities would be, he said that he would enjoy the good opportunity to engage in spiritual practice, complete the few book projects that he has yet to finish, and to continue to engage in professional work whenever he can find time.
Lopen Pema lives in Thimphu with his family.
