The Shades of College Sports Day 2010

The College Sports day took place on the 29th of May with enhanced professional effects, and under perfect weather conditions favourable for the event. There was pomp and glory amidst drumbeats and synchronized drill of aerobics and parade as the Chief Guest, Mr. Tominita, Resident Representative of JICA, declared the sports meet open by lighting the significant sports flame at 9 a.m.

Unlike in the past, this year’s Sports Day demanded mass participation and quality performance, according to Mr. Puspalal Sharma, a member secretary of the Health and Physical Education Department (HPED). They maintained their standard through mass participation from the eight collaborative groups in various track and field events, and quality by maintaining certain criteria as university bench mark in which deserving winners were selected and duly recognized. This was to allow the participants enhance their skills and take part at higher level competitions.

As usual, the participants enjoyed the competitive athletic spirit with all kinds of runs, the relays and field events. The scoreboard kept the competitive spirit among the athletes alive throughout the day as group scores kept changing. Relentlessly, the Collaborative Groups were credited with points on the board that will count towards the final assessment for the Champion Collaborative Group of the year. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded by the chief guest and other distinguished guests to the winners of the day.

According to the Health and Physical Education Department, such an event is not just to fulfill their vision of the sports department, which is “Excellence in sports” but is also to put things into practice and concretize their statement of “Gross National Happiness through individual fitness.”

This year’s Sports Day saw a shift from the traditional culture in which the faculties always played a key role. The reason why the college is bursting at its seams with pride is that the students took complete charge, right from the meticulous planning to running the day. It was a complete students’ show, but it turned out to be more organized and interesting than the preceding year.

Bravo!!!
