The culture of
observing the Mathematics day in
Paro College of Education carries on
with yet another showcasing of the
fascinating world of Mathematics.
This year it was observed on 1st
May, 2010 with the intention of
“linking theory to practice.”
On this day,
the subject which is considered to
be a ‘Wooh….no….no’ amongst the
Bhutanese students, has found its
way to make itself an appealing,
fascinating, and a pleasurable
learning subject. Student teachers
with Mathematics major exhibited
various activities and methods to
teach mathematics through their
improvised teaching-learning
materials and many more. Measuring
instruments improvised from the
locally available materials,
colourful algebra tiles, Cuisenaire
rods (to teach the 4 operations),
mathematical games, attractive
manipulatives, shape mobiles were
some of the examples of the
materials exhibited. All the
strategies, activities and materials
were in alignment with the new
Mathematics curriculum which
emphasizes on ‘making mathematics
more meaningful.’
Teaching
Mathematics with the help of ICT was
a new item that attracted the
audience’s attention this year. The
ICT student teachers with
Mathematics showcased how
fascinating and easy problem solving
can be in Mathematics with the use
of ICT. A mathematical quiz and
problem solving activities using ICT
demonstrated Mathematics in a new
light.
While they have
owned up Mathematics, the student
teachers did not forget to honour
the great mathematicians who have
contributed to the world of
Mathematics. The biographies of
prominent mathematicians like
Euclites, Pascal, Archimedes, and
Ramanujan, and Sakuntala Devi were
displayed and their lives relived
and revered. This was done to show
their respect and gratitude to these
great personalities who have made
our lives easier by solving many
mysteries surrounding us.
The Mathematics
Day ended at 4 pm with student
teachers still thronging the place
for more.
